John Deere Improves Fuel Efficiency and Engine Performance in Utility-Class Wheel Loaders
XUV560 and XUV560 S4 bring even more value and versatility to the crossover utility vehicle market
MOLINE, Illinois (April 1, 2015) — Loggers need machines that work as long and hard as they do, and John Deere is at the forefront in developing equipment solutions to make their job easier – and more productive – than ever before through the launch of new L-Series Wheeled Feller Bunchers. These game-changing machines are now available, along with the new L-Series Skidders, and represent John Deere's most reliable and productive machines ever. The new Wheeled Feller Bunchers redefine uptime, productivity and low daily operating costs, and will change expectations of what a logging operation can accomplish.
To develop the L-Series Wheeled Feller Bunchers, John Deere collected invaluable input from loggers and dealers around the world through Customer and Dealer Advocacy Groups (CAG and DAG). The CAG and DAG provided real-world insights on what works and what doesn't through the lens of the John Deere's customers. Over 250,000 engineering hours, combined with thousands of hours of testing in everyday, real-world conditions, ensure that John Deere has built a Wheeled Feller Buncher that never quits.
"We modeled our new line of wheeled feller bunchers after the most reliable machines in the forest – the people who operate them," said Brandon O'Neal, Product Marketing Manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. "Loggers raised the bar, and we listened and responded with machines that work just as hard as they do day in and day out."
The L-Series Wheeled Feller Bunchers boast several productivity-enhancing features that provide the muscle, yet finesse needed to jumpstart the flow of wood to the landing on a jobsite. Highlights include:
- Best-in-class power-to-weight ratio – the L-Series boast significantly more horsepower for superb responsiveness. This ensures steady multifunction performance in wet or hilly locations.
- One-button Quick Dump – Operators simply press a button to open both accumulating and grab arms simultaneously, releasing trees from the pocket. Head-tilt and arm functions are combined into a single, smooth motion. This feature minimizes fatigue, while improving productivity.
- More stability – Optimal weight distribution and longer wheelbase improve balance for better stability when climbing hills and controlling trees.
- Enhanced lighting options – Six high-intensity halogen lights are standard when loggers need to extend their workday beyond daylight.
John Deere recognizes another key factor to increase productivity is the ability to operate in comfort, which is why the new operator station on the L-Series Wheeled Feller Bunchers was designed by loggers for loggers. The best-in-class cab is 25 percent larger, features a larger front window and is twice as quiet to keep loggers comfortable and in control. Other fatigue beating comforts include a more efficient HVAC system, more ergonomic controls and plenty of storage space. Finally, joystick steering helps reduce strain on the back and neck for less fatigue.
The L-Series Wheeled Feller Bunchers also feature robust hydraulic and electronic systems designed to keep logging operations up and running, while boosting the bottom line. A simplified electrical system features a sealed switch module (SSM) that incorporates many cab switches in one location. Additional improvements aimed at increasing machine and operator uptime include an automatic turbo cool-down to maximize component life, larger pins and bushings on the boom and mast to extend pin life and more robust lift and tilt hydraulic cylinders with heavy-duty wiper seals to minimize contamination.
John Deere has always focused on adding the right engine technologies at the right time built on enterprise wide experience and expertise, which is why the L-Series machines are the first John Deere Forestry machines to launch with Final Tier 4 engines. This smart approach to meeting emission regulations optimizes performance, is fluid efficient and doesn't compromise on power, reliability or ease of operation.
John Deere's L-Series Wheeled Feller Bunchers are now available in the United States in a 643L and 843L model. John Deere also offers a choice of three different disk-saw felling heads for each model. By matching the right felling head to the application, tree type and conditions, loggers can improve productivity while extending the life of the carrier.
