5 Tips for Staying on Schedule
In the construction industry, deadlines are unavoidable. While they may seem like your worst nightmare, deadlines can also be your best friend. When managed properly, deadlines can help prioritize your time, set goals, and stay organized. Don't fear the deadline: follow these five tips to avoid last-minute anxiety and chaos.
1. Check in frequently
Always be in touch with what's going on at your worksite. Make sure you know which employees are on-site each day and are able to get ahold of your team easily for updates or in the event of an emergency. Keeping in touch with what's happening at the worksite when you can't be there helps you monitor progress and make sure everything is running on schedule.
2. Keep a calendar
Although it may seem a bit elementary, keeping a calendar of your projects and events is critical to staying on track. Whether it's a hand-held hard copy planner or an app on your phone, using a calendar of some sort will help keep your projects on schedule and you and your employees on task.
3. Assess possible issues and delays
Don't wait until a problem arises to figure out how to solve it. While not all problems can be foreseen and prevented, it's still a good idea to sit down before beginning a project to brainstorm possible threats and issues and develop an action plan for solving each one. Therefore, you'll already have a plan in place in the event a certain challenge would arise, and downtime on the jobsite can be minimized.
4. Get ahead
If your budget allows, let your employees work overtime to get extra work done while you can. Then, in the event of a delay, your project is not falling behind schedule. Even better, if you don't happen to experience any delays, you may be able to wrap the project up sooner than expected, making both you and your customer extremely happy.
5. Empower your employees
If your team members aren't engaged, they won't be motivated to give their all to make sure the job is completed effectively and efficiently. Make sure you are recognizing success and empowering your employees on the job. If you work hard for your employees, they'll want to work hard for you, too. Together, you can get the job done right, and on time.
