John Deere Insurance Company Privacy Policy

Effective April 16, 2012*


This Privacy Policy applies to the United States operations of John Deere Insurance Company. We understand and respect the need to safeguard information about your personal and financial affairs that we obtain from you. This document outlines our privacy policy for past and present policyholders who have purchased a John Deere crop insurance policy through John Deere Insurance Company and John Deere Risk Protection, Inc. and explains what information we collect, why we collect it, how we protect it, and how and why in certain cases we may share it among our affiliates or with select other parties.

Collection and Retention of Information About You

We collect and retain information from and about you that we believe will help us provide products, services, and other opportunities to you. We may collect and maintain several types of customer information needed for these purposes, for example:


  • Information you or someone on your behalf provides, such as an application for insurance, a loss notice or other claim form, and/or through telephone or in-person interviews;

  • Information your agent provides to us;

  • Information from government agencies;

  • Information your former insurance company provides to us;

  • Information about your transactions and experiences with us, such as your payment history and underwriting and claim records;

  • Information about you from companies owned by Deere & Company, which includes information about your transactions and experiences within the John Deere family of companies; and

  • Information we receive from other third party sources, such as public information and data collection agencies.

We also collect and maintain social security numbers (SSN) or employer's identification numbers (EIN) as part of our sales process for multiple peril crop insurance. Section 506 of the Federal Crop Insurance Act authorizes us to collect such numbers. While providing us with your SSN or EIN is voluntary, without the numbers we will not be able to approve your participation in the Federal crop insurance program.

Our Commitment to Protect Information About You

We restrict access to information about you to those employees who have a need to know such information. We maintain physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to safeguard information about you. Further, we educate our employees about the importance of confidentiality and customer privacy. Finally, we contractually require any person or organization to whom we have shared information about you to protect it and otherwise abide by applicable law.

How We Use Information About You - General

We share information about you only if permitted by law. We do use or disclose information about you for our everyday business purposes, which includes issuing and servicing your policy, providing insurance claims service, offering you other John Deere Insurance Company or John Deere Risk Protection, Inc. products and services that may suit your needs, and for such other purposes permitted by applicable law. We may also provide information about you to regulatory agencies authorized by law to monitor and regulate our activities.

Some of the activities described above are performed through contracts with our affiliates and/or third parties, and they may need to receive information about you. Examples would include claims adjusters, insurance agents, reinsurers, and government agencies.

Additionally, depending on the type of product you have purchased, we may use and/or disclose information about you, your accounts and transactions: (a) to comply with legal process, such as in response to court orders, subpoenas, warrants, summons or similar process; (b) to law enforcement authorities if we believe a crime has been committed; (c) in statistical or aggregate form that does not allow your identification; (d) if you give us your express written permission for a specific purpose not listed in our Privacy Policy; and (e) as otherwise permitted by law.

How We Use Information About You – Written Consent

Except as set forth above, there are certain instances which require your consent to use or disclose information about you. In other words, we cannot use or disclose your information without your permission in writing. If you have provided us with your express written consent to disclose information about you, you may withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us at 888-427-8710. Your withdrawal will only be effective for uses and/or disclosures that have not already been made based on your prior written consent.

If you have provided us with express written permission to use and/or disclose information about you, we may use and/or disclose information about you as follows:

Use by Affiliated Companies for Marketing and Non-Marketing Purposes – We may provide your name, address, and other information collected by us to companies with whom we are related by common ownership or affiliated by corporate control (our "Affiliates").

Use by Deere Dealers for Marketing and Non-Marketing Purposes – We may provide information regarding your name, address, and other information collected by us to authorized John Deere dealerships who are not our Affiliates to allow them to offer products and services to you. We require the authorized John Deere dealership to protect information about you and otherwise abide by applicable law.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

John Deere Insurance Company reserves the right to add, delete, or change the terms of this Privacy Policy from time to time by posting a notice of the change (or an amended Privacy Policy) at this web site.

To Correct Information We Have

We have procedures in place that help us maintain the accuracy of the information that we collect. Please contact us at 866-404-9057 if you believe that our information about you is incomplete, out-of-date, or incorrect.

* This Privacy Policy does not apply to accounts used primarily for personal, family, and household purposes. Crop insurance purchased for an income-producing farming operation is not considered to be for personal, family, and household purposes.
