First and foremost, our obligation is to operate a successful business. That said, we want to do business in a way that betters the world. We seek to create a virtuous cycle of sustainability at John Deere, and to do that, we’ve taken strategic steps to ensure we uphold our sustainability goals.
Workplace health and safety is our priority. We work to achieve safety excellence through increased focus on leading indicators, risk reduction, health and safety management systems, and prevention.
We’ve committed to reducing environmental impact, including CO2 emissions, on 90 percent of our new products. Additionally, we will increase the use of sustainable materials and rebuild sales by 30 percent and by increasing recyclable, renewable, and recycled content.
Change requires action. That’s why we’ve committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 15 percent by using 50 percent renewable electricity and upholding an excellence in energy efficiency.
Water. We can’t live (or do business) without it. With such a critical resource, we’ve planned to implement best management practices in 100 percent of water-scarce manufacturing locations.
Every year, we make more progress on percentage of waste recycled. Now, we’re committed to the bold goal of recycling 85 percent of total waste.
We know that responsible resource management is vital not just to our company, employees, and customers, but also to our world. Every one of our operating processes reflects this strong commitment to environmental protection. We're constantly on the lookout for energy-efficient systems, as well as systems that sustain air and water quality or reduce or eliminate waste. And when investing in new products, approaches, or technologies, we give preference to those that have the least environmental impact.
Using a “Life Cycle Assessment,” we carefully examine every stage of our products’ life cycles, looking for ways to reduce the environmental footprint while improving their performance and durability.
Raw materials: We minimize the impact of the raw materials in our products.
Manufacturing: From manufacturing parts through assembly and shipment to our customers, we strive for the smallest possible environmental footprint.
Use: We reduce the environmental impact of using our products by maximizing fuel efficiency, productivity, and other key operating factors.
Recycling: We design our products for longevity, but when they reach the end of their useful lives, they often begin a second life as recycled materials.
