Powering Forward with Stage V

John Deere Tier 4 Final/Stage V Industrial Engine Inside Dutch Handelsonderneming Benschop (HOB) Generator Set

"Challenge" for some means "innovation" for others. While EU Stage V emissions standards for generator sets pose technical and economic challenges for some manufacturers and contractors, Dutch Handelsonderneming Benschop (HOB) is looking at it differently. Having introduced its very first Stage V generator set with a John Deere PowerTech™ PSS 6.8L engine, the company is sharing its experience with fellow Dutch generator manufacturers in a spirit of open innovation.

Making the switch: Final Tier 4/Stage V

Switching from Interim Tier 4/Stage III to a Final Tier 4/Stage V means adopting aftertreatment technologies to meet the new regulations, such as diesel particulate filters (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR). But as HOB owner Kees Benschop comments, "Yes, it takes time to integrate properly. Stage V is the reality, and I was eager to explore it well before it became mandatory in 2020."

HOB's first John Deere–powered Final Tier 4/Stage V 200-kVA generator set has a modular design that seamlessly integrates the new DPF and SCR technologies. It consists of the John Deere PowerTech PSS 6.8L engine, alternator, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank, insulated housing, and software and electronics. The generator set is specifically designed to meet the needs of the rental market for reliability, quiet operation, and ease of service.

More space, more access — more uptime

Integrating the new technologies took careful consideration. "You need more space for the engine and more time to assemble and connect all the elements, while still ensuring ease of access for servicing," comments Benschop.

NPS Diesel B.V., the John Deere engine distribution in the Benelux, supported HOB with the integration of the new Final Tier 4/Stage V technology. "NPS Diesel and the factory have the engineering excellence and the commitment to help steer us safely through Stage V," Benschop continues. "Three NPS engineers assisted us with the installation, measurement, and application tests. I was impressed with their attention to detail, and the time and effort they invested in getting everything to work perfectly."

Watch, learn, share — and improve

The generator set has already proven itself by providing prime power for multiple events and supplying standby power during electricity net maintenance. "We're keeping a close eye on the performance and on how our customers are using it," says Benschop. "As it's the first in a range of Stage V-powered generator sets, we're gaining insight into what we can improve. We're very pleased with how it has behaved so far, but we already see some small changes that will further enhance the performance of the next one we build."
