Planter Seasonal Maintenance

Spring Maintenance

Operator’s Manual
Review Operator's Manual as you begin spring maintenance projects. It will help to identify maintenance areas, intervals, and procedures. View your machine Operator's Manual in Owner Support.

Row Units
Check for worn or damaged row unit components which may affect seed placement and replace parts (including down-pressure springs, parallel arms and bushings, and seed tube guards).

Seed Meters
Improve spacing and population by examining seed meters:

  1. Disassemble and clean seed meters
  2. Inspect brushes, seals, disks, and wear components for damage
  3. Lubricate meters as recommended in Operator's Manual

Seed Tubes and BrushBelts
Ensure seed tubes are free of cracks and other visible wear (especially at the lower end) and replace as needed.

Disc Openers
Measure and compare to new to determine the amount of wear. Check seed depth manually and adjust to account for normal wear of opener blades.

Gauge Wheels
Ensure gauge wheels make proper contact with disc openers and adjust shims as needed. Replace worn gauge wheel tires that no longer seal against the opener blade.

Closing Wheels
Improve seed-to-soil contact by inspecting closing wheel bearings, pivots, and axles (replace as needed). Ensure wheels are aligned properly and run evenly over the row.

Moving Parts
Lubricate chains, bearings, and pivots with proper lubricants to help decrease friction and increase uptime. View Fluids and Lubricants.

Hydraulic Systems
Check for leaks and damage to hoses and cylinders and verify all are routed correctly.

Tires
Examine for overall wear and adjust air pressure to proper tire specifications to enhance toolbar levelness and depth consistency.
