Protecting the Planet


Using Life Cycle Analysis, John Deere carefully examines every stage of our products' life cycles, looking for ways to reduce the environmental footprint while improving their performance and durability.


As part of the Life Cycle Analysis, we consider:

  • Raw Materials – We minimize the impact of the raw materials in our products.
  • Manufacturing – From manufacturing parts through assembly and shipment to our customers, we strive for the smallest possible environmental footprint.
  • Use – We reduce the environmental impact of using our products by maximizing fuel efficiency, productivity, and other key operating factors.
  • Recycling – We design our products for longevity, but when they reach the end of their useful lives, they often begin a second life as recycled materials.


Design for Environment

Using the "design for environment" process, Deere focuses on the selection of more environmentally friendly materials when designing and building products. Another goal is to keep the use of virgin or unrecycled materials to a minimum in every Deere product. The design for environment process also incorporates minimizing energy use in the factory and supply chain, and, what's most significant in Deere's case, minimizing the environmental impact of products in their use phases through improvements such as better fuel economy.


A variety of product efficiencies is already surfacing as a result of design for environment. Some examples include: reduced material use in product manufacturing, leading to lower input costs and improved worksite productivity; improved electrification, hybrid powertrains, and new components that reduce operational energy requirements; and reduced use of hydraulic systems, which leads to lower environmental risks.

Hybrid Loader Debuts

 

The March 2013 issue of Diesel Progress, an engine industry magazine, highlighted a John Deere milestone — the release of the company's first diesel-electric hybrid wheel loader powered by a 6.8L PowerTech diesel engine.

 

The new 644K hybrid is the result of the John Deere strategy of developing many of its electronic components in-house, said John Chesterman, John Deere product marketing manager for four-wheel drive loaders.

Solutions to emissions

 

Beginning in 2014, the United States Environmental Protection Agency requires diesel engines in new off-highway equipment to meet stringent Final Tier 4 emissions regulations. These regulations affect diesel engines with 175 hp to 749 hp, and require an approximate 80 percent reduction in oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions compared to Interim Tier 4 levels, while maintaining the particulate matter (PM) levels of Interim Tier 4.

 

John Deere is meeting the challenge. In our efforts to reduce engine emissions, John Deere engineers employ a global network of technical resources. As we update engines and equipment to meet EPA standards, we are improving engine performance, maximizing fluid efficiency, and increasing power output.

 

Setting a green course with hybrid mowers

 

One big worry for golf course superintendents is having their finely manicured turf damaged by hot hydraulic oil. Most hydraulic leaks in the reel mowers used on golf courses come from the flexible hoses that feed hydraulic oil to the reel drive. Those hoses get a lot of flexing as cutting units are raised and lowered throughout the day and as they move up and down to follow ground contours.

 

John Deere has a solution: the 8000 E-Cut™ Hybrid Fairway Mower. By removing hydraulics from the cutting unit drive, this machine eliminates leak points. The cutting units are powered by a 48-volt, 180-amp alternator. And no additional batteries are required. The design also reduces the engine speed needed for mowing, which saves significantly on fuel and reduces noise for both the operator and all those around.

 

Fuel Efficiency

 

John Deere has a long history of providing fuel-efficient equipment. Current examples include:

 

Nebraska Tractor Test results show that the 8320R Tractor provides up to 26% greater fuel efficiency over competing tractors in the 75% of pull at maximum power category.

 

Deere's new Hybrid 644K series loader features a new diesel-electric drive system that delivers increased productivity while achieving significant fuel savings.

 

Recycling and Remanufacturing

 

We use recycled or renewable materials, such as corn- and soy-based plastics, in components on many of our combines and tractors. We also provide remanufactured products to customers around the world. Remanufacturing has been a part of our business for over a decade.

Water

Although water is much needed today — and certainly will be in the future — not everyone understands the demand for and the availability of this essential resource. John Deere does. We offer products and services aimed specifically at helping customers conserve precious water. In fact, John Deere Water is one of the largest water irrigation companies in the world, providing high-performance micro-irrigation and drip-irrigation products for the agricultural, nursery, and greenhouse markets. These irrigation methods improve not only water use efficiency, but also yields.

 

Another John Deere division — John Deere Green Tech — provides field engineering for irrigation control equipment. Green Tech developed a generator that produces electricity from water flowing through pipes. The device yields enough energy to power a landscape irrigation controller system or other functions such as low-power lighting or data-logging systems.

Technology

It's amazing what new technology can do for you. Make your life easier. Simpler. More productive. And save you time and money. At John Deere, we know that the best technology can do all these things, as well as help the environment.

 

For example, by using GPS (Global Positioning System), we can increase machine efficiency and productivity in many operations. Besides helping to steer equipment, our precision GPS technology helps control equipment functions, from field preparation through harvest. Seeding equipment can use GPS to control where to seed, helping prevent wasteful overlap or planting through waterways. Machines that apply crop protection products and fertilizers use GPS with other machine intelligence technology, as well. That leads to more precise application of crop care products. Less waste, less environmental impact.

 

Combines use machine intelligence features that deliver automatic feed rate control, assisted steering for higher efficiency, and less fuel consumption.

 

Of course, saving time in the field also dramatically reduces fuel use. The John Deere Load Command system can reduce the time needed to load a self-propelled sprayer from as much as 15 minutes to as little as 3 minutes. Over a growing season, that saves hours of field time and gallons of fuel.

 

With our forestry equipment, machines are designed for maximum efficiency, productivity, and minimal environmental disturbance. For example, Forestry skidders with lockup torque converters make better use of available horsepower. Because John Deere machines use fuel more efficiently, less fuel is needed overall for each operation. Design is a factor, too. For instance, booms on some of our forestry machines can extend beyond 30 feet in many cases, reducing machine movement and requiring less fuel.

 

Our 844K Loader features ride control to navigate jobsites more quickly. And intelligent shifting technology matches clutch engagement to the load. Many of our machines have Total Machine Control, an electro-hydraulic system that automates many functions.
