Here are Allie Gator's top five favorite craft ideas using easy-to-find materials from around your home.
Create a garden you can wear!
Materials:
- An assortment of fabric scraps
 Fabric scissors- Paper scissors
- Glue
- Buttons
- Felt
- Pin backs
- Pencil
- Heavyweight paper
Directons:
- Draw then cut 4 circles and 4 squares in diminishing sizes (3", 2 1/2", 2", and 1 1/2") out of heavyweight paper.
- Select 3 or 4 fabrics designating the heaviest or stiffest fabric for the bottom layer. Cut 4 different sizes. You can mix and match shapes.
- Use your imagination and create wavy edges on some, scallops on others or fringe the edge.
- Lay the pieces on top of each other and when you like the way your flower looks, dab a bit of glue between the layers.
- Choose a button and glue it in the center on top.
- Turn the flower over, open the pin back and glue it to the back.
- Cut a square about 1” out of felt. It needs to be smaller than the inside length of your pin back and glue it on top of the exposed bar glued to your flower. This will help hold the pin back to the flower.
- Let dry.
- Wear!
You can also grow a garden on your refrigerator. Just use a small magnet in place of the pin back!
Make an adorable little chick that's almost as cute as a real one!
Materials:
- 2 large cotton balls
- Egg carton cup
- Orange construction paper scrap
- 2 small wiggly eyes
- Glue
- Damp paper towel
- Yellow washable marker
Directions:
- The night before making the chick, use a damp paper towel to lightly moisten the cotton balls.
- Dab the cotton balls with the yellow washable marker. Re-dampen the cotton balls as needed to allow the color to bleed together on the outside of the balls. Be careful not to get it too wet.
- Let dry.
- Cut the egg carton cup out of the egg carton.
- Trim small rectangles out around the edge so it looks like a cracked egg shell.
- Dab a bit of glue into the bottom of the egg carton and insert one of the cotton balls for the chick body.
- Dab a bit of glue and put the second cotton ball on top of the first.
- Fold the construction paper in half and cut a triangle along the fold (so it looks like a diamond when unfolded). Glue this beak onto the chick.
- Glue the wiggly eyes on as well.
- We made ours so it looked like the chick was facing up to the sky (like a hungry chick). This had the added benefit of keeping the wiggly eyes from sliding off while they dried.
You can also use 1 jumbo cotton ball instead of two large balls to make your chick.

Materials:
- 1 large white paper dinner plate
- 1 large (9" x 12") piece of red construction paper
- Various colors of construction paper scraps
- Oregano
- 1 gallon zip-lock bag
Directions:
- Draw around the outside of the paper plate onto the 9”x12” red construction paper. Then make the construction paper circle about 1” in diameter smaller and cut it out.
- Place the red circle on the plate. The white edges should look like pizza crust, and the red circle like tomato sauce.
- Cut pizza toppings out of the construction paper scraps such as pepperoni, peppers, cheese, mushrooms, black olives, etc. and glue them to the plate.
- Sprinkle oregano on the plate and put it in a zip-lock bag.
- Open the zip-lock bag again and smell the pizza!
While making the pizza, talk about the types of farms needed to make the pizza ingredients.

These sunflowers are easy to make. Create an entire bouquet of them for a great gift or summer decoration!
Materials:
- 1 small plain paper plate
- Paper towel tube
- 1 sheet of green construction paper
- 3-4 sheets of yellow construction paper
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Tape
- Glue
- Stapler
- Sunflower seeds (a small handful)
Directions:
- Use glue or tape to wrap a piece of green construction paper around a paper towel tube. This will be the stem.
- To make the flower petals, trace a child’s handprints on yellow construction paper and cut them out. You will need about 6 handprints.
- Glue or staple the handprints around the small paper plate.
- Staple the stem to the flower (you’ll have to flatten the top of the paper towel tube in order to staple it).
- Put a small layer of glue in the center of the flower. Sprinkle sunflower seeds into the glue and let dry.
You now have a large sunflower!
Create a fun dairy cow mask with an ear tag!
Materials:
- 1 large white paper dinner plate
- 2 smaller white paper dessert plates
- 2 9"-pieces of string or twine
- Some glue, tape or staples (for attaching the plates)
- Black crayon, marker or colored pencil
- Brown paper
Directions:
- Cut one dessert plate in half. These will become the two ears.
- Attach the other dessert plate partially behind the large dinner plate.
- Draw eyes on the small dessert plate just above the large dinner plate and cut them out so you will be able to see when your mask is finished.
- Draw a mouth on the large dinner plate.
- Attach the two half-dessert plates to the top of the dessert plate with eyes.
- Color the cow to make black and white spots.
- Using the brown paper, cut out an ear tag. Write 3 numbers from your birth date on the tag and attach it to one of the ears.
- Attach the string to each side of the mask.
- Wear!
