John Deere Natural Gas engines are divided into two electronic control groups. John Deere engines with the following model numbers are classified as Woodward Control Systems: 6081HFN01, 6081HFN02, and 6081HFN03. John Deere has also introduced a John Deere Control System that is used on the 6081HFN04 engine model.
Distinguishing Features of the Woodward Control System
Engine Control Unit (ECU) has two 30-pin connectors (both black)
ECU is black
Diagnostic connector is a flat, black, 4-pin connector
Engine has an Ignition Control Unit mounted next to fuel metering block
Ignition coils use a 2-pin connector
Distinguishing Features of the John Deere Control System
Engine Control Unit (ECU) has four 30-pin connectors (two black and two white)
ECU is unpainted/galvanized
Diagnostic connector is a round, black, 9-pin connector
Engine does not have an Ignition Control Unit
Ignition coils use a 4-pin connector
Natural Gas Diagnostic Hardware
The diagnostic software and hardware used on the John Deere Natural Gas engines are different depending on the electronic control system. See NG Electronic Control Systems to determine the type on control system that diagnostic will occur on.
Hardware for Woodward Control Systems
Diagnostic cable JT07267 is needed to communicate to the engine control unit on the Woodward Control System. This cable is available through you local John Deere servicing dealer.
Hardware for John Deere Control Systems
Fill out the NG Hardware Request Form to gain information on ordering the cable kit to communicate to the John Deere electronic control unit.

John Deere Diagnostic Software Requirements:
IBM PC or compatible computer with a Pentium class processor running at 233 MHz running the Windows(c) 95/98/ME/NT/2000 operating system.
32 MB Ram Required; 64 MB Recommended
20 MB of free hard drive space for diagnostic software only
60 MB of free hard drive space for diagnostic and reprogramming software
