Items to Consider Before Repowering your Vessel

Know your current vessel performance
Fuel and oil consumption
  • Establish your performance baseline
Use the load factor and duty cycle to figure out the potential fuel consumption savings. You might be able to repay for the repower in a few years.
  • Define your duty cycle and load factor
Determine if additional power will increase the vessel speed
Emissions
Emission rules are in place in the United States.
New rules will apply in 2012 that might require
additional exhaust aftertreatment for your vessel.

International rule applies if you travel to one of the countries that have ratified MARPOL 73/78
Annex VI. Review requirements with qualified personnel.
  • How much power is required to obtain the speed you want?
  • Does the vessel have room for a larger propeller or shaft?
The answers to these questions aren’t simple, so talk to an experienced professional!
   
Review vessel systems
 
  • Make physical comparisons to see if the new engine will fit
  • Review the mounting structure and make sure it will support the engine and power
  • Is the ventilation system sufficient for the air flows?
  • Is the cooling system sufficient for flows and heat rejection?
  • Is the exhaust system large enough for the exhaust flow?
  • Will the exhaust system handle the exhaust temperatures?
  • Will the fuel system provide enough fuel to the engine?
  • Do you need to change the fuel filters to meet requirements of the engine?
  • Are the batteries large enough to start the engine?
  • Is the charging system large enough to keep the batteries charged?
