The key to emissions compliance
The world’s largest land-based well services company turns to John Deere for oilfield equipment repowers

Key Energy When the California Division of Key Energy Services set out to begin repowering its well-servicing equipment to meet California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions requirements, the division turned to their local engine supplier, Western Power Products.

“Western Power Products is a local engine supplier, so we knew they would be more familiar with CARB requirements compared to out-of-state engine vendors,” says Walter Strickland, project manager for Key Energy’s western division. “They also had the Tier 3 engines that we need readily available.”

Quick turnaround is important to Key Energy Services. The company is the largest land-based well services company in the world, operating more than 100 well-servicing rigs in California alone. The company also employs a large fleet of oil-servicing equipment, including John Deere-repowered coiled tubing units, power swivels, substructures, and mud pumps. These products are used for an array of onshore energy-production services, including workover services, fluid and logistics services, and fishing and rental services. The company also has expertise in pressure pumping, electric wireline, and drilling, with a specialty in coal bed methane.

“What we look for is an engine that meets emissions, but also requires low maintenance and is reliable, because we’re often renting equipment to third-party companies,” explains Paul Owen, operations superintendent in the rental-tool district. “Our reputation is only as good as our equipment allows it to be. We have to know that the equipment is going to start, run, and give the customer the value that they’re paying for. That’s very important.”

"To ensure that Key Energy equipment receives the right power source for the job,Western Power representatives went to the field to observe the oilfield applications before recommending engines. Such was the case for a fleet of Key Energy mud pumps that required various adapter housings for the transmissions. “Our service representative is quick to go on location to a rig or jobsite to observe the application, and take the proper measurements to obtain the proper equipment,” says Walter.

"Western Power Products brings a wealth of experience and expertise to oilfield applications. The John Deere engine distributorship worked with John Deere engineers to develop adapter housings for various transmissions used in oilfield applications.

Key Energy chart “Western Power and its dealers have a long history in California oilfields,” states Mike Shaw, business support manager for Western Power. “John Deere engines have been repowering oilfield equipment for nearly two decades,” he says. “But this is just the beginning. Emissions-certified PowerTech engines will bring innovative diesel technology to California oilfields for decades to come.”
