John Deere Power Systems Introduces Engines for Underground Mining Market

Company to Offer Diesel Models Certified by the Mine and Health Safety Administration

WATERLOO, IA (January 18, 2007) — John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) is introducing two diesel engines certified by the Mine and Health Safety Administration (MSHA) for the underground mining market.

PowerTech™ 2.4L Diesel Engine The durable PowerTech™ 2.4L and 3.0L diesel engines received MSHA certification in late 2006 and are ideal for the tough environments of underground mining. The MSHA certification allows JDPS to introduce these engine models in 2007 for a variety of underground mining equipment. These reliable engines are perfect for such applications as personnel carriers, lube centers, utility vehicles, pumps and compressors. They meet manufacturer demand for low-profile engines that fit low-clearance equipment, and JDPS offers a variety of transmission interfaces that meet many customer needs.

“Our engines are well-received in many off-highway markets around the world. The durability and reliability of the MSHA-certified 2.4L and 3.0L John Deere engines make them an ideal choice for OEM customers in the underground mining market,” said Dale Tayloe, of JDPS Market Development.

Tayloe said JDPS began investigating the underground mining market in 2005, and they completed testing and MSHA certification for five engine models in 2.4L and 3.0L displacements in 2006. JDPS will begin accepting orders for these models in January 2007, and customers will be able to receive the engines in spring 2007.

The 2.4L engine has four cylinders and a power range of 37 kW – 49 kW (49 hp – 66 hp), while the 3.0L engine has five cylinders and a power range of 56 kW – 62 kW (75 hp – 83 hp), and all models have an innovative fuel system for cost-effective and clean design.

“These engines offer uninterrupted power and maximized uptime in underground mining applications, all while complying with strict MSHA emissions requirements,” said Gary Grindley, product manager at JDPS. “Both models also offer smooth operation that keeps vibration and noise to a minimum, features that are important in underground mining applications.” Grindley adds that multi-function components are integrated to enhance service and reliability, and the fuel system has a clean exterior that minimizes leaks.

John Deere engines are designed for easy maintenance, and they feature an extended 500-hour oil change and filter interval, as well as single-side service points that make it easy to check and maintain fuel filters, oil filters, starters and fluid levels. And with more than 4,000 service locations throughout the world, skilled technicians are never far away from any mine. All John Deere engines are backed by a one-year, unlimited-hour and two-year, 2,000-hour solid warranty. An extended warranty for up to five years and 5,000 hours is also available.
