John Deere Wind Energy Press Release
New Wind Energy Investment Announced in Michigan
Governor Granholm Toured Project Site
Huron County, Michigan (October 20, 2008) – John Deere Renewables, a national leader in wind energy development, has announced a major renewable energy investment in Michigan. The company has acquired the Noble Thumb Windpark (NTW) in Huron County from Noble Environmental Power. Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, an aggressive proponent of increasing the renewable energy standard in the state, is scheduled to tour the project site this week.
The project consists of 46 GE SLE wind turbines. It has a total capacity of 69 megawatts, which will produce enough electricity to power 20,000 homes. Phase one of wind turbine construction is currently underway, with completion expected by the end of 2008. An additional phase near Ubly may be developed in the future.
The company’s first investment, known as the Harvest project, is located in Huron County, near Pigeon. It consists of 32 turbines with a total capacity of 53 megawatts, which can produce enough electricity to power more than 15,000 homes.
Located near Ubly, the project is made possible by Michigan’s recently enacted renewable energy legislation. "The comprehensive energy package I recently signed into law sends a clear signal that Michigan is ready to diversify its economy, create jobs, and meet our twenty-first-century needs by becoming a leader in renewable energy development," said Governor Jennifer Granholm.
"John Deere Renewables developed the first commercial scale wind project in Michigan, and is pleased to expand its investment in renewable energy generation in Michigan," said David Drescher, Vice President of John Deere Wind Energy. "With the recent passing of a renewable portfolio standard, Michigan has created a favorable investment environment for renewable energy and John Deere plans to be a leader in helping Michigan meet its future energy needs."
