John Deere strives to conduct business and design products in a manner that safeguards customers. Features are built into John Deere products to help protect operators and others from injury, illness and fatigue, and the company helps train machinery operators in safety.
Safety starts with product design
The company's 100 Series and Select Series lawn and garden tractors, for example, provide an option that requires operators to engage a switch to mow in reverse. That helps ensure users check behind them for hazards. A brake interlock prevents starting the mower unless the brakes are engaged.
Ease of use aids safety
We also work to make equipment easier to use and maintain with such innovative technology as auto-connect mower decks that allow compact utility tractor operators to drive over the mower deck and automatically connect the PTO drive shaft. Similarly, the iMatch™ AutoHitch lets operators hook up the PTO drive shaft of rear rotary cutters and tillers without leaving the operator's seat. The company makes simulators for construction and forestry machines, a safer and more cost-effective way to train professionals to handle big machines.
Product design that incorporates safety results from attention to detail. At our factories, product safety committees and facilitators are involved in product improvement and development processes and conduct formal, comprehensive safety reviews of products.
The company's corporate Product Safety Department works with factory safety committees, especially during product technology development, and provides coordination and consistent processes for multiple-factory product development projects. The department also keeps units informed of safety developments and product-safety professionals participate in trade associations and standards development organizations.
Training and education
John Deere also works with customers, John Deere dealers and safety organizations to promote proper use and maintenance of products. The company provides training resources such as videos, posters, brochures, and guides. It also provides training programs for professional equipment operators, delivers safety DVDs with new lawn and garden tractors, has produced television programs to educate property owners who may be unaware of standard safety practices for the equipment they use, and supports child safety organizations, such as Farm Safety 4 Just Kids. In addition, dealers are encouraged to promote safety in their communities through local John Deere safety days.
