Measuring GHG Emissions

John Deere began its energy efficiency program in 1972. In 2003, Deere added a worldwide greenhouse gas inventory program. Between 1972 and 2006, the company's energy conservation programs reduced total worldwide greenhouse gas emissions 63 percent per ton of production. To further manage the risks of GHG emissions from our operations and identify cost-effective mitigation opportunities, Deere joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Climate Leaders program in 2007. Climate Leaders is a voluntary industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies.

Through the Climate Leaders program, Deere has:

  1. Developed a corporate-wide GHG inventory of the six major greenhouse gases and reports progress annually based on detailed EPA protocols and guidance.
  2. Developed a corporate GHG Inventory Management Plan based on a detailed EPA checklist to institutionalize the inventory process.
  3. Established an aggressive corporate-wide GHG emissions reduction goal to be achieved over the next
    5 to 10 years.

In June 2008, Deere publicly announced its EPA Climate Leaders goal to reduce its global greenhouse gas emissions
25 percent per dollar of revenue.

Deere's greenhouse gas footprint is comprised of both direct and indirect emissions. Our direct greenhouse gas emissions come from operations such as foundry, heat-treat, painting, powerhouse, and engine testing. Indirect emissions result from demand for electricity.
