Commitment to Communities
Recognizing that vital communities tend to attract and retain good employees, John Deere has supported activities that improved communities where employees worked and raised their families.

The next generation of innovation at John Deere
The company's commitment to communities has influenced employees as well. Here, in 1943, John Deere Harvester Works employees tout 100 percent participation in the war bond sales during World War II.
John Deere set an example for the company’s employees when he served as mayor of Moline from 1873-1875. Katherine Deere Butterworth shared her grandfather's commitment to community service and became an active supporter of the Visiting Nurses Association and local chapters of the American Red Cross. Her husband William Butterworth, the company's president from 1907-1928, and chairman from 1928-1936, was also active in the Moline/Rock Island chapter of the American Red Cross. He served as its first board president, a position he held for more than 20 years.

The John Deere Foundation, which was founded in 1948, has acted as the company's major philanthropic arm to the community. The Foundation primarily supports programs in education, health and human services, community development, and arts and culture in John Deere communities throughout the United States.
