John Deere Donates Equipment for Winter Storms Cleanup in China

(April 04, 2008) – Following the worst snowstorms in 50 years in southern China, John Deere has donated two tractors to the city of Liu'an to help with recovery work.

In a ceremony at a John Deere dealership, the general manager of John Deere (Ningbo) Agricultural Machinery Co., Ltd., presented the two 52 hp tractors to the city in China's Jin'an district in the southern province of Anhui.

Anhui was one of 19 provinces ravaged by the January and early February storms, which caused deaths, widespread transport problems, structural collapses, blackouts and livestock and crop losses. The storms shut down much of the country's rail system just as tens of millions of Chinese were on the move for the Lunar New Year, annually one of the world's most extensive mass movements of people.

The Beijing News reported after the storms that an estimated 485,000 houses were damaged by the winter weather, while the government estimated overall economic losses at more than 151.7 billion yuan (US $21 billion). Power throughout the region was not completely restored until early March.
