A John Deere 8430 tractor like the one shown here recently set a new fuel-efficiency record at the Nebraska Tractor Test Lab.
The tractor, which is rated at 18.65 horsepower-hour/gallon, delivered an 8.8 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the John Deere 8520 tractor it replaced. A similarly equipped 8520 had previously posted test results of 17.13 horsepower-hour/gallon.

Horsepower-hour/gallon is the standard measurement using for comparing fuel efficiency among all agricultural tractor models. The Nebraska Tractor Test Lab, which is located in Lincoln, Neb., is the officially designated tractor testing station for the United States. It tests tractors according to the codes of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Twenty-eight countries participate in the tractor test codes, with active tractor test stations in approximately 25 of those countries.
