Volunteerism

Our company's first community activist was our founder John Deere. From 1873-1875, he served as the mayor of the city of Moline, Illinois -- the location of our corporate headquarters today.

Deere served as a model for his granddaughter Katherine Deere Butterworth, who became an active supporter of the Visiting Nurses Association and local chapters of the American Red Cross. Her husband William Butterworth, who served as our company's president from 1907-1928, and chairman from 1928-1936, was also active in the Moline/Rock Island chapter of the American Red Cross. He served as its first board president, a position he held for more than 20 years.

Today thousands of John Deere employees follow the example of our founder and his family by actively volunteering in their communities. Some of the volunteer programs supported by John Deere employees include United Way, Junior Achievement, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, and many other community organizations. Many John Deere employees and retirees also volunteer in their communities through churches, schools and other organizations.
