Turning Heads

Turning Heads

With their purpose-built strength and big power, the John Deere ’54 Series swing machines are getting lots of attention from loggers.

“It’s unbelievable how it makes the head perform, and how much stronger it is,” says a southern customer who switched to a 2054 after years of experience trying modified standard excavators outfitted with processing heads. He immediately saw the performance and durability differences in these true purpose-built carriers.

“It’s got a lot of guts,” says a customer in the Pacific Northwest, who owns a 3554 processor with a 624 Waratah head. “Right now I’m just trying to keep up with it.”

At 141 hp (105 kW), the 2054 model is propelled by a six-cylinder John Deere 6068 turbocharged diesel engine with torque to surprise you. Load-sensing hydraulics add to the efficiency of the system and ensure smooth cycles and easy operation. Bigger brother 2554 gives a bit more at 177 hp (132 kW) from the 6068H, and the 3554 effortlessly handles the biggest jobs at 246 hp (183 KW) with the 6081H engine. John Deere swing machines come with a factory-installed front for your specific application, whether it’s road building, shovel logging, stroke delimbing, loading logs, or processing.

Electronically-controlled fuel injection delivers all the torque you need on demand at low RPMs, which is easy on fuel and components. These exceptionally well-balanced machines have the horsepower, hydraulics, balance, swing and drawbar to maximize productivity.

When it’s time for routine maintenance, the ’54 Series make it easy. A hydraulically-tilting cab is standard on the 48-in and 72-in risers, which tilts into a full forward position to avoid height clearance problems during transport. Large service panels aid in reaching the bowels of the machine for easy service access.

The operator stations meet all current FOPS, FOGS, and OPS regulations to protect the operator. Inside the spacious cab, comfort and visibility is top of the line, with features like the adjustable deluxe suspension seat, AM/FM radio, and all-season climate control. Joystick controls and switches are easily within reach. The 2554 and 3554 also have an optional rear-entry cab.

“Getting in it, you can see everything a lot better than I thought you could,” says a customer with a rear-entry 3554. “You turn around one way and see both sides of the counter balance. I really am happy with this machine.”

As with all John Deere forestry equipment, the ’54 Series swing machines are supported by the most extensive dealer network in the industry and unsurpassed parts availability.

Whatever your application, a ’54 Series swing machine is a tough work horse that will boost your productivity
