Operators Get Real-World Experience with New Loader Simulator

John Deere Loader Simulator

Customers have a new tool to train equipment operators with the unveiling of our four-wheel-drive loader operator training simulator. Building on the success of the excavator simulator, which was released last year, the loader simulator also features real-world situations.

Nine highly detailed and realistic lessons teach proper operator technique, machine controls and safe operation on a virtual jobsite. Lessons include bucket loading, driving on a jobsite, moving a load with narrow and wide forks, unloading a flatbed truck with forks, loading trucks and moving the loader onto a lowboy trailer for transport. Numerous jobsite hazards and over 20 safety violations are built into the simulator and reinforce the importance of safe machine operation on the jobsite.

After completing each lesson, operators receive immediate feedback on their performance. Operators are scored against a budget and other skilled operators to help identify their strengths and opportunities for improvement.

The loader simulator, which was developed in cooperation with the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, was officially unveiled at the International Union of Operating Engineers training, safety and health conference in July. Representatives from all North American unions were in attendance, and John Deere was the only manufacturer invited to the event. We had both the loader and excavator simulators set up for operation.

"The IUOE Training, Safety & Health Conference was a perfect event for the launch of the loader operator training simulator," said Michael Hoeg, Senior Instructional Designer and Developer. "John Deere operator training simulators not only help unions effectively train new operators, but they also get the John Deere name in front of the operators going through their program and help us begin building relationships with these people early in their careers."
