The focus of virtual prototyping is to design, analyze, and evaluate products and manufacturing processes using computer-generated virtual environments before a physical prototype is built or before committing to a production plan. In some cases, advanced computer workstation-based engineering analysis tools are used. In other cases, these virtual prototyping tools and applications are coupled with 3-D, immersive tools to visualize complex datasets.
Both workstation-based methodologies and immersive collaboration technologies are used at the John Deere Technology Center. Examples of this work include immersive computational fluid dynamics simulations of a cotton picker, designing advanced vehicle and factory operator workstations and using digital models of human operators. Other examples include measuring operator performance with immersive, human-in-the-loop simulators, predicting vehicle frame fatigue life using computer based mathematical models, and interacting with a simulated production process from within a virtual factory.
