As the cost of oil and gas continues to rise, interest in using our forests as a source of renewable energy is gaining momentum. Although usually treated as waste, slash and other forest byproducts have enormous potential as a supply of biomass material that can be used to produce clean, renewable energy. They need only to be harvested.

John Deere’s biomass harvesting system includes a wheeled cut–to–length harvester and forwarder working with a 1490D Bundler to gather and package slash. Over fifty 1490Ds are already busy harvesting biomass in Europe, but the technology and process are still relatively new in North America.

This creates an exciting new opportunity for loggers who are interested in diversifying their business and improving their bottom line.
