Winter 2009 Cover Story: Call of the Coyote

Winter 2009 Homestead Magazine Cover Simple ways to make your property less attractive to this stealthy predator

Bill Borgwardt never guessed he was about to save a life as he started his drive back to his acreage north of Edmonton, Alta. He was just about home when he stumbled across a fierce life-and-death struggle; a coyote (Canis latrans) had isolated a neighborhood housecat out in the open and was slowly circling in for the kill. The cat was up on its hind legs valiantly trying to fend off the attack, but there was little doubt about the eventual outcome, unless the man were to intervene. Borgwardt honked his horn, and the sudden sound startled both animals. The coyote ran back into the woods, while the cat streaked off to the safety of his home.

To learn more about coyotes read the Winter 2009 issue of Homestead Magazine.
