Fat for the birds (Fall 2005)

Make your own birdseed-suet mix

JohnDeereHomestead.com With cooler weather, birds are on the lookout for high-energy snacks. You can help out by feeding suet.

“You don’t need anything fancy,” says Jean Haack, a naturalist with the Ledge View Nature Center, Chilton, Wis. “Birds will do fine with just chunks of beef fat placed in a net bag, like the ones that come with onions or oranges. Secure the bag high enough so dogs can’t reach.”

Homemade snacks
You can also make a birdseed-suet mix. Haack recommends slowly heating the fat until it is soft, mixing in bird seed, and then pouring the warm mixture into a container that’s the right shape for your suet feeder.

“If raccoons take a liking to your suet,” says Haack, “you may need to feed it in a wire-mesh feeder.”
