Protecting innocent bugs (Summer 2006)

Homestead magazine Right now there are lots of bugs in your garden, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. “Just three percent of the bugs in a typical garden are harmful,” proclaims Joe Lamp’l, gardening expert and host of “Garden Smart” on PBS. “If you are overly aggressive with insecticides, you’ll end up killing many pollinators and beneficial bugs in the process.”

Selective control
Lamp’l recommends gardeners take their time, identify problem bugs, and then find the most selective way of taking them out. “If you need to use an insecticide,” he states, “systemic products are more selective because the chemical agent translocates throughout the plant tissue. Bugs that are munching on the plant get zapped.”

For more information on insecticide options, check out Lamp’l’s Web site at www.joegardener.com.
