Clean start for plant containers (Spring 2006)

Containers are a great way to add color and life to your porch or patio. But if you simply reuse last year’s containers you may be asking for trouble. “Containers can harbor plant pests and diseases,” states Jennifer Reinbrecht, Colorado State University Extension master gardener. “That’s why it’s best to hose out your containers and rinse them with a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. Clay or porous pots may need to be soaked in the bleach solution.”

Buy new potting soil
Disinfecting the pots reduces the risk of cross contamination from disease and pests, and reduces salt residues. “Do not reuse old potting soil,” Reinbrecht advises. “Buy a true potting medium that will be free of weeds and have nutrients for a good growing season.”
