Beware of killer rabbits (December 2005)

JohnDeereHomestead.com The bark of young trees can look pretty tasty to a hungry rabbit or mouse in the dead of winter. That’s why it’s a good idea to offer your young fruit and ornamental trees some protection. “There are a number of good repellants on the market,” says Jeffrey Gillman, of the University of Minnesota Horticulture Department. “Just follow the label recommendations for the timing of applications.”

Use a physical barrier
You can also make a physical barrier by shaping a cylinder out of quarter-inch screen, sometimes called hardware cloth. “It should be buried two to three inches underground,” Gillman notes, “and be tall enough to be about 24 inches above the expected snowfall.”
