Equipment Corner (March 2007)

Homestead Anyone who has ever wielded a shovel for even a short period of time knows just how handy it can be to own a backhoe. From planting trees, putting up fences, or trenching for irrigation, this is one tool that won’t set idle for very long.

For most, a dedicated backhoe is hard to justify. However, an easily attachable unit is not. Much like a loader or a rotary cutter, a rear-mounted backhoe can easily be attached to a compact utility tractor. Even small chassis models like the 2305 and 2210 Compact Tractors can be equipped. The new 260 Backhoe is a great example. It can turn a compact tractor into an aggressive digging machine in practically no time at all.

Check it out
There are several checkpoints you want to look for when selecting a compatible backhoe - digging specs are just a part of the equation.

Look for a model that uses a 4-point mount that hooks directly onto the tractor. This type of structure integrates the tractor and backhoe into one unit, providing a solid base for superior digging and excellent weight distribution for optimal performance.

Easy on and off is essential. Once the unit is initially installed, you should be able to take it off without any tools or hassles. You don't want to take all day just to put it on. Additional versatility is important, too. Can you keep other attachments on while using the backhoe? The 260 Backhoe, for example, is compatible with a mid-mount mower. Even though you won't use them at the same time, taking the mower off just to put on the backhoe is time-consuming.

Grading on a curve
Is the boom-design curved? Much like construction backhoe loaders, a curved boom provides maximum visibility to the trench and can often increase your reach. All of which provides you with an even more efficient unit.

Expanding the functionality of your tractor with a hard-working backhoe is easy, especially if you keep these points in mind when making your selection. See your dealer about turning your tractor into a digging machine. Ask about a backhoe today.
