Summer 2009 Cover Story: A Hidden World

Summer 2009 Homestead Magazine Cover See the amazing microscopic aquatic life in your pond

Your backyard pond might look peaceful and serene, but when you look at life on a smaller scale, it’s a veritable jungle. At the microscopic level your pond is filled with predators and prey. These beautiful, though strangelooking life forms are locked in a life and death struggle for survival. It is a miniature Serengeti Plain, and all that you need to embark on a safari is a microscope.

Ron DeAngelis of Harrisburg, Pa., has always kept fish in aquariums as a hobby. When he retired, he decided to build an outdoor pond in the backyard as well. After reading about all the interesting things that were growing inside his filters, he decided to go buy a microscope and look for himself.

To learn more about the hidden world in ponds read the Summer 2009 issue of Homestead Magazine.
