Ready to Plant (RTP) Full Story
Ready To Plant

Lower costs, boost results with Ready To Plant solutions

It's no secret that next spring's planting season could be the most expensive ever, given the rising cost of inputs. But while your preferred products may be expensive, they're essential. And skimping on quality isn't an option.

So what are your options in the face of escalating prices? The best one is to carefully choose the inputs that will be most beneficial to your operation, and then use them with precision. That means planting and treating so that inputs are pushed to maximum efficiency and waste is eliminated.

Sounds good, sure, but is it possible? It is with John Deere. We have technologies that enable the precise use of all your inputs.

RowCommand™ individual row control system
One new technology is the RowCommand™ individual row control system. RowCommand allows you to turn on and off up to 16 sections on your planter when on headlands or point rows. Seed is planted only where you want it, which controls costs. And because proper spacing reduces plant competition, yields may improve.

Operating RowCommand is easy, too. It can be used manually, but really shines when paired with SeedStar 2 and Swath Control Pro™ for a fully integrated system.

Not surprisingly, RowCommand can be ordered as a factory-installed option on new equipment. However, RowCommand can also be installed on newer planters that are equipped with Pro-Shaft Drives.

Central Insecticide System
Another alternative John Deere offers to help you save on input costs is the Central Insecticide System (CIS). CIS combines the performance of liquid insecticide with the convenience of our Central Commodity System. Designed to work with Force® CS insecticide, this closed-handling system gives you several benefits. First, you'll enjoy efficient, hassle-free corn rootworm and secondary pest control. Second, you'll get no more than 5 percent variation row to row on application rates. Third, single-point calibration gets you up and running quickly. And finally, capacities of the insecticide and water tank will let you cover more than 200 acres without stopping.

Customers who've used the CIS with Force CS are pleased with the results. But as corn rootworm pressure continues to spread and intensify from traditional areas into states like Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin, this approach may hold even more potential for producers - especially when Force is applied over a corn rootworm traited hybrid.

In Syngenta trials, there's been an average yield increase of more than 12 bu/acre when Force was applied to trait-enhanced corn. The advantage is two-fold: First, you'll get enhanced activity for late-season corn rootworm feeding. Second, you'll get control of secondary pests such as cutworm, wireworm and white grub that a rootworm hybrid alone doesn't control.

PerforMax Planter Inspection
Every planter, no matter what its age, can benefit from a PerforMax planter inspection. During the inspection, trained technicians will thoroughly check your planter and identify damaged or ill-working parts. Items like worn opener blades and warped seed disks can hinder your planting success. Replacing a few simple parts can dramatically boost the effectiveness of your planter.

Seed Meter Enhancements
Another suggestion is to upgrade your seed meter. We've developed a patent-pending flush-face seed tube that provides uninterrupted seed drop. That means less bouncing and rolling when seed hits the ground for more accurate seed spacing.

There's also the ProMAX 40 Flat Disk, which has been used for years by sweet corn growers. This flat-faced disk successfully singulates heavily treated seed, as well as inconsistently sized or shaped seed.

These components can make a big difference in the uniformity of your corn stands, which is an important component of high-yielding corn. But remember: The meter enhancements work best as a package. Used together, the results will be more compelling than if you choose to implement one change only.

But making even one change - whether on your meter or by adding RowCommand or the Central Insecticide System - will bring benefits. Each of the improvements makes better use of your inputs, and therefore helps manage their cost.
