John Deere 582 Silage Special Round Baler slices feed costs

582 Silage Special Round Baler Stacy Milton of Twin Springs Jerseys farm in Dadeville, Mo. has only owned his John Deere 582 Silage Special Round Baler for less than a year.

Still, he’s quickly seen the benefits to his bottom line. In fact, since he started making bales with the new baler, he’s seen a 10 percent reduction in feed costs.

The exclusive MaxiCut precutter was a primary reason Milton decided to buy this baler. It features a feedroll with pairs of rotating fingers that pull crop through a set of up to 14 serrated knives. The crop is cut into short, uniform pieces before it enters the bale chamber. The result? Feed is more palatable, easier to digest. And there’s less feed left to waste on the ground.

Before buying the John Deere, Milton owned a comparable competitor’s model baler with a pre-cutter. He says he’s able to get roughly 200 more pounds of haylage in each John Deere bale, compared to the previous model. He also believes that since the bales are tighter, less air gets in, and his feed quality stays higher.

Milton also discovered that more palatable feed and tighter, denser bales weren’t the only benefits of a 582 Round Baler. He’s now able to quickly power through the biggest windrows, so he can get in and out of the field, faster. And out of the 1,100 silage bales he made last year, he only had one or two plugs. That was when Milton saw the advantages of the exclusive, simple-to-use John Deere Powr-Reverser.

“The baler was nearly impossible to plug,” says Milton. “But when it did, the Powr-Reverser quickly cleared the blockage, and I was able to start baling again in a matter of minutes.”

Milton also credits exclusive John Deere Cover-Edge™ net wrap for boosting his bottom line. Cover-Edge is the only net wrap on the market today that consistently goes over the edge of the bale to hold in nutrients, resist crop-spoiling weather, and keep bale quality high. It also makes the bales more compact and easier to wrap. Milton estimates Cover-Edge helps him save roughly 5 to 10 percent per season on wrapping costs. In addition, compared to twine, net-wrapping significantly cuts down the amount of time to wrap each bale.
