Tom Robitaille, Lafontaine, Ontario
Near the shores of Georgian Bay, on Lake Huron’s east side, you’ll find the small town of Lafontaine, where Tom Robitaille and his wife Linda rely on their John Deere 6420 with IVT™ to handle a practically endless number of different jobs.
In the summer, they farm 500 acres of soybean, canola, and wheat. He also does custom spraying, seeding, and harvesting. In winter, heavy snow fall keeps Tom busy clearing roads and driveways.
“Whether I’m doing loader work, seeding, spraying, or snow plowing, it’s important to have the right gears,” says Tom. That’s why he made the shift to IVT. “With this transmission you always have the right gear, because there are no gears. It’s at your command. If you want to go faster or slower, just move the lever,” he says. “It’s like a miracle – that’s how nice it works.”
IVT combines the seamless speed variation of a hydrostatic drive with the efficiency of a field-proven John Deere planetary transmission. The engine and transmission communicate up to 500 times per second for instant response to changes in conditions.
“The load response is amazing,” says Tom. “It has a lot of reserve horsepower and torque - you can’t stall it! And I’m really pleased with the fuel economy and the performance,” he adds.
Equally important is the ease-of-use. “It’s easy to understand and trouble free,” says Tom. “The more I drive it, the more I like it. It’s my first John Deere tractor, and I’m really proud of it. I’ll never buy another tractor that doesn’t have IVT.”
