John Deere dealer, C Smart Agricultural Services, is the market leader in tractor sales in its area of Dorset in southern England. Now, with the firm’s sprayers, the dealer not only has an additional product, but one that could open more doors to further sales.

The dealer was fortunate to have a very keen member of staff who was instrumental in helping to set up and build the credibility required to sell the machines that are still seen by some as a ‘specialist area.’

“We quickly became a National Sprayer Testing Scheme centre – the first in the region. We now have two staff qualified to test machines and we carry out about 70 tests a year (250 in total so far),” explains dealer principal Colin Smart.

While sales of new sprayers are yet to hit double figures, he feels the new additions to the range can only help. Also, by testing a range of machines at the dealership it introduces existing customers and those with other makes of tractor to the relatively new John Deere sprayer range.

“A sprayer is a product that is sold on its technical merit and detail. It is rarely a decision based on price alone, although value for money counts. John Deere sprayers are very well made and have high quality features and specifications, which are not included on some others or may be options.

“It is also important that potential customers can experience that quality for themselves. Performance in the field and boom stability in particular are very important, and this is where John Deere excels,” explains Mr Smart.

Customers have been impressed with the quality of the machines. Indeed, one prospective purchaser delayed his decision until visiting a competitor’s factory. Based on what he saw there he decided to buy the John Deere – ‘phoning from the factory to confirm the order!

Current owners of the John Deere sprayers the firm has sold are very satisfied with the machines. “It is a good product that is very suitable to UK conditions. The design fits with UK needs and expectations and is very user friendly,” adds Mr Smart.

With a broad range of products and support from John Deere’s sales and technical training, Mr Smart sees sprayer sales as a growth area in his business. The technical background and enthusiasm of the staff is an important factor, along with the test centre status. But in the end it’s the product that counts, and he sees the John Deere range as a sprayer that has the inherent quality to help sell itself.
