Commercial mowers make a MITIE contribution

Lyndhurst National landscaping and estate maintenance company MITIE Lyndhurst Services Ltd recently completed the purchase of 55 new John Deere C52VK anti-vibration system (AVS™) mowers from dealer Winchester Garden Machinery.

The system features special vibration absorbing elements attached to each side of the handlebar, to reduce hand-arm vibration (HAV). It is exclusively fitted to John Deere’s 52cm (21in) commercial walk-behind rotary mowers, and is designed to offer local authority, public utility and private contractor users all-day, stress-free operation.

With these elements fitted, the mowers meet the latest EU and HSE directives on operator safety. The officially recorded daily vibration exposure level of 2.5m/s2 ensures that operators can work a full eight hour day safely. This level is a reduction of 30 per cent on equivalent mowers that do not have the AVS™ system fitted.

Larry Jones, managing director of MITIE Lyndhurst Services Ltd, commented: “I am delighted to add these new John Deere mowers to our fleet of over 300 pedestrian and ride-on machines, which are used every day during the growing season.

“The two most important things in our business are the quality of service that we provide to our customers, and the safety and well-being of our employees. This new commercial mower from John Deere addresses both these issues.

“Its robust build, reliability and excellent cutting ability provide the level of product quality and service we are looking for. Its design, which reduces the levels of vibration that our operators are subjected to, also helps to protect our employees from the risk of HAV.”

Based in Luton, MITIE Lyndhurst Services Ltd was established in February 2006 by integrating the MITIE Group’s embryonic landscape business with the 25 year old groundscare company Lyndhurst Services. Regional operations cover the whole of Britain from Cornwall to Scotland and Wales to Norfolk.

The company provides a wide range of grass cutting, grounds maintenance, landscape construction and interior tropical plant services to retail parks, commercial organisations, corporate bodies and local authorities. The business also covers golf courses, schools, playing fields, cemeteries and other amenity areas.

“Winchester Garden Machinery used to supply John Deere machines to the previous MITIE Landscape South business, so we had an established relationship and knew the high level of parts and service support we could expect to receive,” added Larry Jones.

“When we decided on a replacement programme for our pedestrian mowers, we were already taking vibration figures into account. We have a comprehensive monitoring system in place for HAV, and once we arranged a demonstration and our operators tried them out, the new John Deere AVS mowers proved to be the best choice.”
