New greens mowers are extra safe and quiet

2500E Greens Mower

A number of detail changes have been made to John Deere’s greens triple mowers for 2007, designed to improve operator comfort and safety.

The new 2500B diesel and 2500E hybrid diesel/electric greens mowers are powered by the same 20hp Tier 3 diesel engine as the new 2653B professional utility mower, which is designed to meet the latest emissions and noise regulations. They are also now fitted with a standard ROPS frame, seat belt and locking seat pan to meet pending ISO safety standards.

Both machines incorporate a larger muffler to reduce noise levels, down to as low as 79dBA, while rubber-mounted hydraulic lines provide additional reductions in both noise and vibration. Other features include common hood styling, a new radiator and a new hydraulic tank design, which is also shared with the 2653B triple mower. The tank now features a dipstick for checking hydraulic fluid levels more accurately.

The 2500B and 2500E mowers are equipped with three 56cm (22in) cutting cylinders, available with either seven- or 11-blade reels and smooth or grooved front rollers. These are offset to the left to help reduce tracking on greens, caused by regular mowing; this is done by changing the direction of travel on alternate days.

Height of cut can be varied from 3 to 19mm (1/8 to ¾in), or from as low as 2.1mm (1/12in) using the optional tournament blade, and overall cutting width is 1.57m (62in). The QuickTach cutting units float independently to follow ground contours. The comfortable operator station features a five-position steering wheel, adjustable seat and the CommandArm operator console, which provides fingertip control of the throttle, reel drive and raising and lowering of the cutting units. A new hourmeter displays all the key mower functions, as on the 2653B.

The 2500E remains the golf and turf industry’s only hybrid greens mower, combining conventional diesel power with electric motors to produce a quieter, more environmentally friendly machine.

Advanced technology has eliminated 102 potential hydraulic leak points, without sacrificing overall reliability, power or cut quality. Highly efficient electric reel motors replace the reel hydraulic pump, hydraulic motors, backlap valve, oil cooler and all associated flexible hoses, fittings and hard lines.

The mower uses the diesel engine to drive an alternator, which provides consistent power to drive the cutting units via the electric reel motors – there are no batteries to charge. The 2500E can be used for greens mowing with groomers and power brushes, tees and approach mowing or verti-cutting, without the potential for hydraulic leaks to cause damage to greens and other fine turf areas.

Options for both mowers include greens tender conditioners, rear roller power brushes and vertical cutting units, and operator training and safety instructions are provided on DVD.
