‘Best buy’ lawn tractor featured at Chelsea

Chelsea John Deere’s new X Series lawn tractors and walk-behind lawnmowers are on display at the Chelsea Flower Show for the first time. These include the 17hp X304 mulching mower, which was recently nominated ‘best buy’ in the Daily Mail Weekend magazine’s guide to ride-on mowers. This model has four-wheel steering for greater manoeuvrability and effortless trimming around garden features, without having to continually reverse.

The stand also features a special floral display of the company’s distinctive ‘leaping deer’ logo, which is the eighth John Deere trademark used since the company was founded 170 years ago, in 1837. The display has been made by Lavender Green of Windsor in Berkshire, using a mixture of green, yellow and white carnations.

Four of the company’s Gator utility vehicles are being used by the Royal Horticultural Society this year, to carry people and materials around the site throughout the build-up to the show and during the event itself. Last year they helped transport over 100 cubic metres of bark chips to various public areas of the show ground, to deal with the wet ground conditions after some heavy spells of rain.

John Deere offers an extensive range of walk-behind mowers, scarifiers and ride-on lawn tractors, with mowing, bagging and mulching options to suit lawns and gardens of all shapes and sizes.

New for 2007 and suitable for large lawns up to 1500 or 2000m2 (half an acre) in size, the R47KB 47cm (19in) and JX80 52cm (21in) rear discharge walk-behind lawnmowers are based on a lightweight die-cast aluminium deck with a deep design for more efficient grass cutting. Both models are powered by an efficient 6.5hp overhead valve (OHV) petrol engine, and come with a standard 15 year warranty for domestic use.

Common features include John Deere's exclusive TurboStar fan-assisted mowing system and TurboJet strengthened blade, which provide excellent grass lift and maximum airflow for improved mowing and grass collecting in all conditions. The rear grass bag also includes an indicator to tell you when it is full.

As an extra safety feature, when the standard blade brake clutch on each model is released, it stops the mower blade but leaves the engine running, which allows the grass bag to be emptied without needing to restart the mower every time. Handles on both models are adjustable for height and can be folded away for easier storage and transport.

The popular lawn tractor range now includes the all-new John Deere Select Series X300 and X500 models, which replace the hugely successful LT, LX and GT ranges. The 17hp X300R rear discharge model features a completely new TurboStar mower system, in which the deck and a powerful integrated blower fan propel and pack the grass into the standard collection hopper.

Higher up the range, the X540 Multi-Terrain lawn tractor is built around a 26hp V-twin engine for increased power in tougher applications. Built on a strong chassis with a cast iron front axle, and featuring hydraulic deck lift, power assisted steering and a differential lock, this machine is designed to work over larger areas – around 8000m2 (2 acres) or more – for long periods.
