John Deere Power Systems

John Deere Engines With roots several decades deep in farm equipment manufacturing, John Deere is often first thought of as a major player in the agricultural industry. Some overlook that John Deere is also a global leader in construction, offering a full line of equipment and parts, as well as off-highway diesel engines ranging from 36 to 448 kW (49 to 600 hp).
At John Deere, we have more than 85 years of off-highway engine experience and expertise. Since 1949, we have designed and manufactured more than 5 million diesel engines and have established a network of more than 4,000 John Deere dealers that offer engine service and support. John Deere engines are produced in different factories worldwide: Saran (France), Waterloo (USA), Torreon (Mexico), Pune (India), and Rosario (Argentina). John Deere is a leader in developing world-class diesel engines and integrating them into off-highway applications. John Deere engines are distributed to more than 700 OEMs worldwide for use in construction, marine, agricultural and forestry machines, air compressors, generator sets, irrigation pumps, and natural gas on-highway applications. John Deere also manufactures drivetrain components.

Saran Factory
Saran factory
Saran factory is based near Orleans (France), manufactures diesel engines from 36 to 205 kW and has been ISO9002 certified by the AFAQ (Association Française pour l'Assurance de la Qualité) in November 1990. Saran is nowadays ISO9001 (2000 version) as well as ISO14001 (environment respect) certified. Administrative centre as well as Marketing Branch (responsible for engines Sales in Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia and Australia) are also hosted in Saran factory. Moreover, European Engine Engineering based in Saran is dedicated to customers applications management, Emissions (Stage IIIA) and Noise European regulations follow up as well as specific parts conception and development. Latest technologies are also tested in newly installed cell tests.

European Test Facilities for Tier 4 Challenges
European Test Facilities
John Deere has set up a new European Engine Engineering (E3) R&D facility at its site in Saran, France. The center will house four specially-developed test cells, including one which can handle entire vehicles.

Interim Tier 4/Stage III B regulations will become mandatory in Europe in 2011, with Final Tier 4/Stage IV due in 2014. By creating its new R&D facility with a staff of about 120 people, John Deere is ensuring it is at the forefront of application development for vehicles equipped with these engines. Work on the new R&D center began in February 2007 and three Tier 4 test cells have been operational since April last year. The fourth will come into use by the end of 2009.

In line with the new Tier 4 regulations, the test facilities are capable of transient cycle as well as steady state testing. This gives a more realistic simulation of engine performance and emissions output, enabling reductions in the engine’s overall environmental impact. The fourth "whole vehicle" cell will enable similar testing of engines in vehicles such as tractors or construction plant.
